What is an Olympic Weight Set?

An Olympic weight set is at weight set meant for heavier weight lifting. A standard Olympic weight set is 300 lbs.

A 300 lb Olympic Weight Set has plates with a 2″ hole instead of the 1″ hole that a standard weight set has. A 300 lb weight set consists of 2-45 lb plates, 2-35 lb plates, 2-25 lb plates, 2-10 lb plates, 4-5 lb plates, and 2-2.5 lb plates. It also includes a 7′ bar, usually made of chrome, and 2-2″ spring collars to keep the weights from falling off the bar. The Olympic weights are often made of cast iron. Most sets come in either black or gray colors.

Olympic Weight Sets are also found in 210 lb, 390 lb, 400 lb, 480 lb, 500 lb, 570 lb, 645 lb, and 765 lb. Many larger weight sets are found encased in rubber, making them so durable that it is almost impossible to harm them. Usually, these sets just have an extra pair of 45 lb weights, but some have extra pairs of 25 lb weights, 10 lb weights, 5 lb weights, and 2.5 lb weights. Also note that a regular chrome bar that comes with the 300 lb Olympic Weight Set can only support about 370 lbs, then it will start to bend. If you want to lift larger amounts of weight, you need a stronger bar to do so.  VTX by Troy Barbell makes a 765 lb. Olympic Weight Set that includes only 16-45 lb weights and a Texas Power Bar. The Texas Power Bar can support up to 1500 lbs of weight, just a little bit more than most people will need.

Most Olympic Weight Plates are made of cast iron and there is nothing fancy about them. Some barbell manufacturers carry other types of weights, some are covered in rubber, others are covered in polyurethane, both make the plates much more sturdy and some people say that they are even “indestructible”. Some manufacturers make plates that interlock, so they are safer and prevent accidents. Other plates have extra holes or wider edges on them to make them easier to grip and handle.

Some popular Olympic Weight manufacturers are Troy Barbell, USA Sports by Troy Barbell, VTX by Troy Barbell, York Barbell, Weider, Marcy, and CAP Barbell. Buy your Olympic Weight Set today.
